This drum is named Matahari (or Sun) to represent the warmth of a parent's love. The West African symbol carved into the drum is called The Leg of a Hen. It is a symbol of the ideal nature of parents, being both protective and corrective. A close translation is "The hen treads on her chicks, but she does not injure them." The Matahari Pro African djembe drum is a professional level djembe that sounds absolutely fantastic and is built to perfection. Made with the utmost care and attention to detail this Pro African djembe drum is a hand-carved beauty that is not only stunning but a true work of art. It just doesn't get any better than this! We take great pride that our djembe drums are environmentally friendly. Each drum is made from legally harvested/Government inspected and certified Mahogany. Size: Kindly note that this djembe is hand-carved from start to finish; the height and diameter stated is a size range for this model drum. Height may vary by about one inch and the head size stated is ring-to-ring, meaning that the goatskin playing surface is typically about 1 to 1.5 inches smaller than the ring size. If you are an adult purchasing your first djembe, we highly recommend a drum that is at least 24" Tall with a 12" Head to be sized appropriately. Smaller drums would be purchased for those that want to dance while playing or are looking for a traveling drum.
